From No Hope to a Life Saved by Artificial Intelligence

Joseph Coates, a man with POEMS syndrome, a blood disorder that hurts your nerves and other parts of your body, was suffering from an enlarged heart and failing kidneys when he was connected with David Fajgenbaum, MD, MBA, an assistant professor of Translational Medicine & Human Genetics. Fajgenbaum pioneered an initiative to use artificial intelligence to comb through treatments already approved by the FDA and repurpose them for conditions that currently have no effective treatment. Once a combination of treatments was determined and applied, Coates’ condition improved significantly, and he was able to get a stem cell treatment that has helped put him into remission.
