Research Milestone Timeline

Due Date: January 1 of PGY 3 year

Who: All Clinical 3s except those on 6yr track

Submit: 3 tentative projects / titles and corresponding advisors

To Whom: Web site & Advisor(s)

Even if you have the greatest idea ever, you still need to submit 3 ideas. It is important that you have thought about it and come up with tangibles.


Due Date: February 1 of PGY 3 year

Who: All Clinical 3s except those on 6yr track

Submit: Final Project Title & Final Primary Advisor

To Whom: Website & Advisor

Your final project should be determined after discussion with potential advisors; your final advisor needs to be the responsible faculty/ principle investigator in name (IRB etc.) and in function (overseeing and advising etc.) DURING THIS TIME, start using the checklist to guide you in considering the issues that will help you to make a final decision (is it interesting, feasible etc.) You will need to complete the attached checklist by the next milestone due date. Note: you will need to have the elements completed with answers for your chosen primary senior project and signed by you and your PI.


Due Date: March 1 of PGY 3 year

Who: All Clinical 3s except those on 6yr track

Submit: Names of 2 additional committee members, signed checklist & confirmation of IRB submission

To Whom: Website, Advisor, 2 Committee members

After you decide on your project/advisor, bring on 2 additional committee members (3 total including your advisor) to help guide your project and get feedback. Go over the items on the checklist (attached) in detail with your advisor—submit the completed checklist signed by you and your advisor.  Under the guidance of your CRC (clinical research coordinator) and Annamarie Horan, submit the appropriate IRB.  ALL RESEARCH INVOLVING HUMANS OR DATA FROM HUMANS MUST GO THROUGH IRB.


Due Date: April 1 of PGY 3 year

Who: All Clinical 3s except those on 6yr track

Submit: Confirmation of IRB approval

To Whom: Website, Advisor, 2 Committee members

Email an update regarding your IRB approval. Is it approved or not approved? Those that are approved should begin data collection!


Due Date:  July 1 of PGY 4 year

Who: All Clinical 4s except those already done with research year, Current Research Residents

Submit: Interim Progress

To Whom: Website (all), Advisor/2 Committee members (clinical only)

A single paragraph is sufficient and at 3 months, you are not expected to have much. If you are floundering though, this is a good checkpoint to get help. If you are in trouble, you MUST engage (1) your primary advisor, (2) committee, (3) Dr. Ahn/Mehta. Have a regulatory issue? Go to Annamarie Horan fast.


Due Date: January 1 of PGY 4 year

Who: All Clinical 4s except those already done with research year, Current Research Residents

Submit: Interim progress & data analysis; Begin writing

To Whom: Website (all), Advisor/2 Committee members (clinical only)

A single paragraph is sufficient. If you are not collecting data by now, you are at risk of not presenting as a PGY 4 and of residency review! Start organizing your data early so that you can analyze; have a plan for data analysis, including who will do it, WELL BEFORE date collection is complete. Start writing your intro, methods, basic discussion, and references BEFORE all your data are collected.


Due Date: May 1 of PGY 4 year

Who: All Clinical 4s except those already done with research year, Current Research Residents

Submit:

  1. Senior Project via Survey Monkey
  2. Manuscript via Resident Portal
  3. Abstract to AAOS

Submitting to the AAOS of your chief year is a no brainer. If we do this right, all of the chiefs will have something accepted to the Academy.


Due Date: June of PGY 4 year

Who: All Clinical 4s except those already done with research year, Current Research Residents

Present your talk at Research Day… obtain glory!


Due Date: January 1 of PGY 5 year

Who: All Clinical 5s

Submit: to peer-reviewed journal for publication

Submit: abstract to UPOJ
