Network Services

PennNet (and AirPennNet) is the University’s enterprise data network permitting wired and wireless access for faculty, staff, and students in all campus buildings and residence halls.  It provides connectivity to all university services and applications and it allows remote access to sites on the Internet and Internet2. PennNet wired and wireless connections may also be available in select UPHS facilities.

Capacity Assumptions/Restrictions

Network infrastructure and controls all the ports. Within UPHS facilities, UPHS IS manages the physical network infrastructure and controls the ports.  Depending on the needs of the end users, PMACS technical resources will work closely with the end user and the appropriate IS organization to determine which network access is needed and where and then enable the connection

Sensitive, Restricted and Public Data

Cost

ISC charges the following fees as it relates to PennNet physical infrastructure:

  • New Port Activation: $40 / port
  • Conversion of Existing Port: $20 / port
  • Power over Ethernet Port Activation: $40 / port
  • Monthly IP Address Charge: $1.60 (plus headcount charge)
  • Virtual Network Setup: $500
  • Customized DHCP options: $200 per option

UPHS generally does not charge for port activations for existing physical ports, but may require the use of a telecommunications vendor if setting up new wiring and the purchase of routers if sufficient capacity is not available

PSOMNet is a secure network that is accessible to registered users that have a need to perform their work-related or research-related duties in a secure, controlled environment.  A user can only access PSOMNet with a unique username and password.  The level of security is such that external outside threats like viruses, spoofing, phishing, etc are minimized or completely eliminated.

HUPNet (UPHSnet) is a secure network very similar to PSOMNet. It is the internal network used to manage all network activity across all the health system’s facilities. UPHSNet operates as an internal “Intranet” for private health system technology resources.

The PSOM VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows secure, encrypted remote access to network resources, both for users working remotely and for some sensitive applications used by people working on campus.  User must have a username and password, and they must install a VPN client on their workstations.  Desktop support personnel are able to assist with the configuration of the VPN.
