Preparing for College Teaching in STEM

Application Opens Spring 2026

Instructor: Jennifer Round, Ph.D. (jround@upenn.edu), Associate Director of Faculty Programming & Pedagogy, Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning & Innovation (CETLI)

Description: This ten-week interactive program will introduce Penn postdocs to best practices in academic teaching. Through selected readings, discussion, and reflection, participants will examine the the needs of diverse learners and identify the knowledge and skills we’d like them to gain from our courses. We will explore the use of active learning to structure class sessions that are engaging, inclusive, and interactive, and we will consider various types of assessment and feedback that support our students in achieving our learning goals. Throughout this program, we emphasize the importance of building community and communicating effectively with students to set them up for academic success. Participants are asked to reserve two hours per week for preparatory readings and assignments and 90 minutes each Wednesday morning for synchronous, in-person discussions.
