Co-authorship guidelines

All RMPC services should result in acknowledgment of the RMPC in presentations and publications resulting from the work.

In addition, occasionally there is involvement by our staff conceptually in the experimental design, approaches, or extensive analysis and interpretation of data which may warrant a co-authorship to acknowledge the individual’s significant contribution. Please consider co-authorship in these instances, as such recognition is very much appreciated by the individual core members and a great reward for their efforts. For additional guidance, refer to the paragraph below excerpted from “Transparency in authors’ contributions and responsibilities to promote integrity in scientific publication” (PMID: 29487213)

Each author is expected to have made substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data; or the creation of new software used in the work; or have drafted the work or substantively revised it; AND to have approved the submitted version (and any substantially modified version that involves the author’s contribution to the study); AND to have agreed both to be personally accountable for the author’s own contributions and to ensure that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work, even ones in which the author was not personally involved, are appropriately investigated, resolved, and the resolution documented in the literature."

Core facilities must charge for services rendered according to cost accounting practices set up at each institution.  Charging for services does not preclude authorship on manuscripts provided the Core laboratory individual has contributed to the research in a substantial way.  If authorship is anticipated, it is preferably established at the beginning of the project so that both the customer and the Core researcher are cognizant of each other’s criteria.

If you want to schedule an experiment, please reach out to our Technical Director, Corey Holman at  holmanc@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.
