Penn Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program

Students undergo an application and interview process through PennKDSAP and are matched with a mentor based on their interests. Students are asked to commit a minimum of 10 hours per week over a minimum of one semester, though ideally develop a longitudinal relationship with the lab they are matched with. Monthly didactic meetings are led by HUP and CHOP mentors and address responsible conduct of research, accountability, and communication skills. Students are required to present a poster showing their progress on their project at the end of the year. Appropriate projects are broad, and may include substantial contributions to smaller projects or incremental contributions to larger ongoing projects.

PCEN Summer Scholars Program

This program aims to inspire future leaders in pediatric kidney disease research by engaging students in meaningful research and clinical experiences in pediatric nephrology. The program is open to undergraduate, post-graduate, or medical students. Start and end dates are flexible as academic schedules may vary for each student; however, an 8 week commitment is required. Students will work with a mentor on a research project and will have opportunities for didactic training and clinical shadowing in nephrology. Students will also attend seminars about research and careers in medicine and will take one or more courses on epidemiology or data science.
