Former Navy Corpsman Uses Military Experience to Advance Patient Access and Care

Alex Peraza, a CPUP senior project manager and former Navy Hospital Corpsman, dedicated a decade to serving others and providing medical care in some of the most challenging environments. Today, Peraza supports projects that improve patient access, but the lessons he learned in the military—including bedside care, proper planning, and an understanding of the differences between clinical and administrative roles—still apply. “The biggest thing I learned is that people matter the most,” says Peraza, who emphasizes the importance of collaboration and respect.

Blending Lessons From Civilian and Military Medicine to Improve Disaster Readiness

Penn Medicine trauma surgeon Jeremy Cannon, MD, retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 9 years on active duty and 12 in the Reserve. Now, Cannon will tap his work as a physician in both settings to examine practices in each of these sectors and explore how civilian hospitals can partner with military medical staff to sharpen skills. Cannon is among 10 military veterans selected by Stanford University's Hoover Institution as a Bochnowski Family Veteran Fellow for 2024-2025.

From Army Beginnings to Supporting Caregivers on the Front Lines

Now, as a CPUP senior project manager, he’s thrilled to be close to patient care again, saying, “Working directly with physicians and interacting with the people providing care is really exciting and motivating for me.” Drawing on his military experience, Ten Berge is committed to making work easier for those on the front lines, supporting the caregivers who impact patients’ lives every day.

A Gateway Into Medicine

Pete Schiavo entered the U.S. Navy right after high school, and his six years in the military were largely spent aboard the Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier. For Schiavo, serving his country was the greatest privilege, even when training in alligator-infested swamps, and he rose through the ranks to petty officer second class. But when reflecting on his service, it isn't experiences like sailing five of the seven seas or crossing the equator that make him emotional—it's the fact that he continues to serve by caring for his "brothers and sisters."
