Headquarters Committee

Dr. Saunders reported on a recent meeting of the Headquarters committee. The space is now well appointed with desks, computers, printers, paper, books and periodicals. There is also a refrigerator and soft drinks. It is an ideal space for many academic activities as well as for emeriti who live out of the city and come in to work. However, since Nov 09, the space has only been used on average for 10-12 2-hour visits per month according to the sign-in sheet. We would like 150 person-hours/month. It can accommodate 8-12 people for meetings, sign-out rounds, discussion groups, brown-bag luncheon discussions and bridge. Many possible additions, including a coffee machine, cards and games were suggested. Dr Saunders will prepare a letter to the general ASEF membership with a description of the space encouraging its use, accompanied by a questionnaire to determine interest and ideas. We have invited PASEF members to use the space, as well, since they are unlikely to successfully acquire a space on the other side of Spruce Street. This will be discussed at the next PASEF meeting.

Dr Wehrli and his colleagues presented the details of his NIH-funded study on peripheral vascular disease for which he is requesting permission to ask ASEF members to participate as elderly normal-age matched controls. The Council approved their request.

Council members (Drs Kefalides, Goldfine, MacGregor and Meadows) held 2 luncheon meetings to acquaint members of ASEF with opportunities for leadership and to encourage them to participate more fully. (see attached report by Dr. Goldfine) Both were successful in that 9 individuals accepted the invitations and appeared interested in becoming more involved. At both meetings there was a discussion regarding the pros and cons of merging ASEF with PASEF. This discussion continued in the Council. All other university emeritus groups combine both medical and other schools There could be many advantages of a merger, but the major disadvantage would be loss of a specific medical, both clinical and scientific, focus of the ASEF membership in programs.

Committee Reports
Service

Drs. MacGregor reported that there is now some movement from the administration regarding their brochure for visiting Penn-associated personnel in the Hospital. They are still waiting for the lawyer’s approval.

Seminars

Dr. Winegrad reported on problems with the new administration of the Faculty Club. Dr Kefalides will follow up. There will be a luncheon programs on January 23rd,February 14th and April 23rd .

Program

The Holiday Party, to which all ASEF and PASEF members were invited, was held following this meeting. Dr. Steinberg reported that on 17 January there will be a Retirement Seminar sponsored by ASEF and another in May sponsored by PASEF. Both will include information for both groups. The PASEF meeting will focus on the experiences of recent retirees. On March 6th Dr. Becca Levy will come for a talk. June 19th will be the last council meeting and the End of Year party. Members who were present at the PASEF Emeritus Program were pleased with that caterer and we will also try them for our End of Year event.

Communications

Dr. Myers has updated the web pages, including the photo of the Council. He again asked Council members to update their bios on the web site and the Penn site.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:40 pm Respectfully submitted Anna T. Meadows, MD President-Elect
