The meeting was called to order by Dr. Kefalides at 12:15 p.m. The minutes of January 17 were approved.

Nominating Committee

(Goldfine) Potential new additions to the Executive Committee were discussed (Albelda, Broennle, Paterson, Salcido and Shaw). Dr. Paterson has agreed to accept the nomination; the others are pending. The committee applauded the announcement that Dr. Jeanne Myers has agreed to be the candidate for President-elect.

Retirement Community Working Group

Dr. Goldfine reported that a working group of PASEF has been formed by Dr. Allen(Lois Evans, Howard Goldfine, Elsa Ramsden and Jim Saunders) to provide information from various retirement communities in the local area.. One suggestion was that PASEF hold a fair on campus to provide information. An additional suggestion was to survey faculty members who are already living in such a community and to confine our review to those with positive experiences. Dr. McCarthy asked if there could be a list of questions for the communities; there are about 40 around Penn but we should start with 15 – 20 to get information. The group is thinking about a Hitchhikers Guide to Retirement Communities.

Programs

Dr. Meadows drew attention to the programs at the College of Physicians. She pointed out that they are free and open to the public; not only evening about also midday programs. Dr. A. Myers said he could provide a link on the website.

Committee Reports
Service

Dr. MacGregor reported that the patient visitation program has still not been fully approved; he has the brochure and he anticipates the program should be functioning by the end of spring. He also spoke about broadening the opportunities for the emeriti in the teaching area but the administration was reluctant to implement this before hearing specific interests. Possible opportunities include Doctor/Patient Relationship for first year students and a couple of other courses on non-scientific aspects of medicine in which faculty might be interested in participation. The contact is Anna Delaney, Director of the Curriculum Office (898-8091) For other topics of particular interest; ASEF would help in directing the faculty member.

The Speakers Bureau was discussed and a number of titles (Hearing loss in Elderly; Exercise as we Age; Cancer; Healthcare Advocacy; Foreign Surgical Missions; Joint Replacement in the Elderly; Preventing Fractures in the Elderly; Dealing with Strokes; Health Considerations while Traveling; Interpreting Lab Tests) were suggested, together with the appropriate speaker.

Luncheon Seminars

Dr. Winegrad has speakers lined up for each month through June. He suggested that it is important to let the speakers know the nature of their audience. Dr. Bloch is the new chair as of July 1 2012 and has Willo Carry (WHYY) for the fall and Joshua Plotkin for the spring. Ezekiel Emanuel was suggested as a speaker, possibly as a major talk and possibly about healthcare before the election. (Note: he will be the speaker at the CHOP annual meeting in June).

Program

Dr. Myers reminded members that Becca Levy will be speaking on March 6th at 3:30 pm in BRB II/III and this needs to be well publicized. Rachael has informed the Institute of Aging and we need posters and flyers. Dr. MacGregor suggested asking Dr. Trojanowski to publicize it in the Institute of Aging. Dr. Meadows will contact him. The reception will be in BRB 14, and food has been ordered for 35 people. Chef’s Table will be used as the caterer.

Communications and Website

Dr. Myers has announcements for the next three luncheon talks on the site. There was some discussion about whether we should have articles from an expert there; e.g. Should I have a PSA? But this was not settled.

New Business

Dr. Meadows received a survey from the Dean's Office; but it only relates to active faculty. It was a survey on medical education from a national organization. She recommended that emeriti respond to the Penn survey. Dr. MacGregor suggested that emeriti who no longer have a mail slot in their former department might like to have mail delivered to ASEF in Penn Tower 21. Suggested to send an e-mail to find level of interest. Dr. Heyner volunteered to explore the possibility of an ASEF tour at the Art Museum for the Van Gogh exhibit.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 pm. Respectfully submitted Susan Heyner, Secretary, Treasurer
