The meeting was called to order by Dr. Kefalides at 12:15 p.m. The minutes of December 19 were approved.

Headquarters Committee

It was announced that the letter and questionnaire had been sent out to the ASEF mailing list regarding the space usage on 21 Penn Tower. Several council members did not recall receiving the email, so Rachael Berget will resend the email to everyone, including PASEF. It was also suggested that the subject line in the email be more noticeable.

Dr. Kefalides stated that there had been some meetings with new emeriti that are interested in joining the ASEF Executive Council. The meetings were with 9 people. Dr. Goldfine has a report that details the results of these "Roundtable" meetings. This document will be circulated in the future to the council members. As a result, Drs. Goldfine and Meadows have the names of some people that may be candidates for open council positions. They still need to meet with the candidates personally to ask if they will serve on the council. Dr. Meadows also asked that if anyone has any candidates that they would like to recommend, to send them to either Dr. Goldfine or herself.

Dr. Kefalides asked Dr. Bloch to be the chair of the luncheon series beginning in September. Dr. Bloch agreed and the council unanimously approved the motion. Everyone was encouraged to think of potential speakers and send those names to Dr. Bloch.

Committee reports
Service

Dr. MacGregor has encountered some bureaucratic obstacles required for emeriti to become official HUP volunteers, including security issues and the need to commit to 100 hours service/year. Discussions continue. Plans for volunteer teaching assistants may be encountering similar problems. Regarding the Speakers Bureau efforts, emeriti who can speak to lay organizations should contact Dr. MacGregor.

Luncheon Seminars

Dr. Winegrad distributed a list of five scheduled seminars. In addition there was a reminder of the ASEF Spring Symposium on March 6th featuring a talk by Dr. Becca Levy on the "Longevity Revolution" at 3:30 PM in Room BRB with a reception to follow.

Program

Dr. J. Myers reminded the committee of the "Vicky and Hilary Retirement Session" that would be taking place this afternoon. Dr. MacGregor will introduce the speakers and make a 3-minute pitch for ASEF, including recognition of Dr. Wales's work on the "Hitchhiker's Guide". The end of year reception will be held on June 19th to which PASEF is to be invited. Dr. Kefalides had earlier suggested that another event with a reception be added to the calendar between Christmas and June, but consensus was that it is too late this year to arrange for one.

Communications and Website

Dr. Myers was not present. Dr. Winegrad explained that luncheon seminars, though attracting 5 to 15 attendees in person, were viewed on our web site by as many as 500. He suggested that we should not change anything about the seminars, but advertise their availability. Another idea to consider was creating a YouTube page and exploring the possibility of posting 1-hr. clips on YouTube.

PASEF

Dr Goldfine reminded us of the upcoming appearance of Vartan Gregorian on April 2nd . The exact time, place, and format are TBA. PASEF is sponsoring another preretirement event that will feature a panel of guests. The University is not going to sponsor a retirement community. PASEF was contacted by a local retirement community wanting to obtain access to retired/retiring University person. After some discussion the committee decided that it was inappropriate to make an exclusive deal with one community, but that a "retirement community fair" was a good idea. Drs Saunders, Goldfine, and Ramsden will follow up. Dr. Meadows suggested that we could list retirement communities on our website, with links, but there was no discussion of how they would be screened, chosen, etc.

New Business
  1. Philadelphia College of Physicians. Dr. Meadows reminded us that PCOP sponsors lunchtime and evening seminars which are generally free and open to the public. It would be desirable to have a link from our web site to theirs, and especially desirable to link from PCOP web site to ours. Dr. Meadows will follow up with an official of PCOP.
  2. WHYY. Dr. Saunders approached Dan Gottlieb to ask about a possible talk on emotional problems in retirement. He was referred to Willo Carey who specializes at WHYY on matters of aging. She is Vice Chair of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, a board member of the Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly, and a member of the External Advisory board of Penn’s Institute on Aging (www.comingofage.org/about/willo-carey). Dr. J. Myers viewed Willo's slide show on the activities of retirees and found it interesting. Dr. Saunders will contact Willo Carey and give information to the Program Committee to make arrangements for a talk.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:20 pm. with birthday wishes to Dr. Kefalides. Respectfully submitted, McIver Edwards, MD, At-Large Member of Executive Council
