The meeting was called to order by Kefalides at 2:40 pm. The minutes of the prior meeting were approved.
President's Report
Kefalides reported on the satisfaction of his two year tenure as president, thanked Meadows and Goldfine for their support, and expressed his appreciation to the Council members.
Administrative Report
Over the past two weeks Julian has met with individuals to determine the procedure for faculty to be connected to the Penn Directory as Emeriti. A Pennkey is necessary to enter the information, but Julian can do it for people in ASEF without a Pennkey. Kayvon will update PASEF. Clinical/research track retirees will be listed as "retired" not emeritus.
Julian Pugh also reported that a search team has been hired to search for a newly created position: Vice President for Diversity. Rachael described the position as broader than Affirmative Action (which is required by the feds for grants), would be more proactive and would include factors such as sex, sexual orientation racial origin and geographical factors.
Following McGregor's suggested that ASEF meet with the Dean on an annual basis to discuss what ASEF can contribute to the Penn Medical School, Meadows agreed.
Data on Retirement Facilities
Goldfine reported on the ASEF/PASEF retirement questionnaire. The committee have sent out hard copies of the questionnaire that resulted in more than 100 responses. About 25% are in retirement communities. About 85% are interested. The popularity goes from Quadrangle, to Beaumont, to Cathedral Village to Medford Lakes.
The subject of the naming opportunity was raised. It was suggested that Council should invite the Dean to discuss the outcomes of the money already pledged. Meadows suggested that this be discussed at the meeting with the dean.
Web Site
It was agreed that we need to get people to visit the website. Goldfine suggested that we have something new there each month to encourage visits.
Service
The Visitation Program is on track; the volunteers will undergo 'training'. Unfortunately, since its initiation four team members have dropped out and there is a need add more volunteers. The possibility of working as a Volunteer in Medicine was discussed but has already been tried. The major problem is malpractice coverage. There is one program in West Chester that accepts volunteer physicians.
Program
Steinberg and J Myers are planning for the Emeriti party in the fall. There will be classical music by a quartet. Steinberg outlined the other programs for the coming year (see Website). Ezekiel Emanuel has cancelled his talk with PASEF but will keep his date with ASEF in April 2013.
The meeting concluded with the End-of-the-Year party. Respectfully submitted, Susan Heyner, Ph. D. Secretary, Treasurer.
