The meeting was called to order by Dr. Kefalides at 12:15 p.m.

  1. The minutes of 15 February were approved.
  2. Dr. Goldfine gave his report on the Naming Opportunity. Dr. Saunders pointed out that ASEF would be making a significant gesture of its contribution to medical education by supporting a room in the new Advancing Medical Education building, an add-on to the Johnson Pavilion. Members of Council will be asked to make a pledge before going to the whole membership, probably in the fall. Recently, $11,000 has been raised, bringing the total to $26,000. The Council members were in favor of going forward. Dr. Goldfine said that if we could raise $50,000, then Development might be able to find a benefactor to raise the sum to $100,000 which would be sufficient for a classroom. Dr. Jeanne Myers asked about the solidity of the proposed building, and Dr. Goldfine explained that he will ask the Development office (Lisa Katz) to draw up a document to go along with a request for funds from the membership. Dr. Seltzer pointed out that a donation of $50.00 from 674 members would result in a total of <$30,000.
  3. Dr. Seltzer reported that she and Marjorie Hassen developed four courses at the Library for members of ASEF and PASEF, but excluding spouses: Humanities/Social Sciences; Health Sciences; Google tools and Refworks (see attachment).
  4. Dr. Kefalides drew attention to the fact that there are ongoing workshops in the Biomedical library.
  5. President elect: Dr Goldfine as Past- President is chair of the nominating committee; he is confident that we’ll have a nominee by the next meeting. Dr. Meadows would like more members to volunteer to be on the Council. According to Dr. Alan Myers, general requests do not usually meet with much success; therefore, Council members need to actively seek new members.
Committee Reports
Service

In the absence of Drs. McGregor and McCarthy, Dr. Steinberg discussed the concept of members helping in a clinic as community service. There is an Association of Community Centers (Federal and State) however, clinics want a firm commitment of time; the liability coverage seems not to be problem. One clinic has been identified and this will be publicized on the website and sent out as an e-mail.

Luncheon Seminars

Dr. O'Malley gave a very well presented seminar on removal of tumors in the head and neck area. It has been recorded by Dr. Alan Myers on the new video camera. Next seminar is on 11th April with Dr. Labov. These as well as other relevant programs are on the ASEF Web Site.

Other Programs

Dr. Meadows reminded Council that Dr. James Metz will give an update on the Roberts Proton Therapy Center on 23 March, in the Austrian Auditorium. This will be followed by a reception. She also spoke about the Fall talk by the new Dean, which will be held at the end of October. Dr. Sheldon Hackney will speak on 21 April at the Wharton school.

Headquarters

Dr. Saunders has tracked the use by members and suggested that activities need to be increased. It has mainly been used for reading, holding meetings and writing.

Retirement Community

On 10 March, Dr. Saunders and Dr. Strumpf met with Mr. Carnaroli and other staff to discuss plans for a retirement community and to ask them to review the retirement vision statement. He emphasized that the community must be on the Penn campus and be Penn branded. Mr. Carnaroli instructed the real estate people to meet with the healthcare administration and to see how they could be integrated. He will being the issue up before the Capital Committee of the University. Dr. Saunders suggested that we publish in the Almanac and solicit feedback. He also supported contacting alumni groups in the surrounding area. He is seeking some alumni to serve on the committee. A questionnaire is being developed to see If there are about 150-200 individuals who would be interested in such a campus site. Maybe half a dozen potential sites have been identified on the Penn campus.

Meeting adjourned 1:15 pm
