The meeting was called to order by Dr. Kefalides at 12:15 p.m. The minutes of February 21, 2012, were approved.
President's Report
Dr. Kefalides welcomed Vicki Mulhern as a member of the Executive Council. Vicki then gave a brief description of the Stylus student magazine that has been broadened to include articles by faculty. Interested individuals should contact Vicki, who will assist in making the relevant connections. She also reported that the Dean has set up six groups to work on an ambitious strategic plan. Dr. Saunders asked if these groups included one on service. Vicki will send a link so that the committee can be aware of ongoing events.
Dr. Goldfine asked about the status of renovations for the Medical Education building. The Dean is still considering this. The Committee discussed Dr. Meadows’ suggestion that we form an ad hoc committee to formulate new ideas.
Dr. Kefalides reported that PASEF discussed spousal survival and whether benefits revert to the remaining spouse; currently, the spouse can get a Penn card for $25.00, but this privilege terminates when the (faculty) spouse dies. Vicki will explore this question further.
Nominating Committee
Dr. Goldfine reported that he has submitted a slate to Rachael Berget. (see attached). Dr. Kefalides reported that Leonard Warren has resigned. Also, following the meeting, Dr. Goldfine was going to talk to Dr. McIver Edwards, who has thought about resigning from the board because he is unable to attend many meetings. Discussion regarding new members: Dr. Saunders pointed out that Dr. Kefalides can make new appointments—two years in the case of Dr. Warren and one year for Dr. Edwards. Suggestions for replacements were made and will be followed up by Drs. Meadows, Kefalides and MacGregor.
Retirement Communities Task Force
PASEF is interested in assembling information on retirement communities within the Philadelphia area. There are ~310 communities in 12 surrounding counties (including Nursing Homes). A questionnaire will be developed to cover items such as amenities, costs, etc. Specific communities will be linked to the website so that individuals can be informed about a particular community.
Service
Dr. MacGregor reported a final approval so that he can advertise the visitation program. This will be up on the website within the week. The brochure is finished. Nursing supervisors can also ask if Penn-related patients would like a visit. PASEF has also shown interest in this project.
Luncheon Seminars
We have three more in April and two in May
Program
Dr. Steinberg told the committee that the Dean traditionally gives the first talk to Emeriti, but that Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel would be a good choice for the big talk during the year. Dr. Becca Levy's talk was very well attended with more than sixty in the audience and at the subsequent reception. Applause for Dr. Jeanne Myers’ efforts at the latter. Discussion ensued over the caterer for our end of year party (Feast Your Eyes, Chef's Table, or Jack Kramer). Caterer was not resolved. The possibility of music at the party was also discussed and Dr. Myers will look into it, as the majority thought we should try it.
Dr. Steinberg pointed out that we need to have the program for new Emeriti organized soon. He will approach the Dean for a talk and will aim for September. Discussion ensued regarding the place for the talk and reception. Most people favored BRB II/III auditorium/lobby for the reception.
Communications and Website
Dr. Alan Myers pointed out that PASEF site has a number of activities listed and we might want to follow suit. Dr. Goldfine suggested that ASEF might offer space for chess and similar activities at the Headquarters.
Other Business
Dr. Heyner reported that the cost for a guided tour of the Van Gogh exhibit would be $34.00 per person; Dr. Meadows pointed out that most members are already members of the Art Museum so this would not be very appealing. The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 pm.
Respectfully submitted Susan Heyner, Secretary, Treasurer
