Location
Conference Room D, 21 Penn Tower 12:00pm – 1:30pm
Present
Drs Bloch, Deren Heyner, Kefalides MacGregor, Meadows, A, Myers, J. Myers, Nachmias, Steinberg, Warren, Winegrad and Julian Pugh (FAPD) Absent Dr. Roger Allen (PASEF) Rachael Bergert (FAPD) and Howard Goldfine
The meeting was called to order by Dr. Kefalides at 12:15 p.m. The minutes of October 18th were approved.
Dr. Kefalides expressed his approval of the reception for emeriti and asked for suggestions to improve the occasion. There were several comments suggesting that the introduction of new emeriti should be more streamlined and less time consuming .The proposed brochure (see 18 Oct. minutes) was not feasible due to time constraints. Dr. Steinberg said that about 75 people attended the program, but only about 45 went up to the reception. This resulted in a cost of about $100.00 per person attending the reception. There was discussion re-another organization, Chef’s Table who did PASEF for $3,000 and members were urged to go to the PASEF reception and report on the catering. Three other events need catering and he recommended that we spend around $500.00 for the Holiday party.
The search for new and active members of the Council is still ongoing. Drs. Goldfine and MacGregor have listed potential members and are planning to invite them to lunches during which they will interest them in working with ASEF. They hope to do this in December and by March, when the ballots are sent out, to have candidates. They will send the suggested candidates' names around to the committee for approval.
Suggestions for increasing interest in ASEF: Dr. Heyner suggested getting groups to go to local museums for special interest tours. She recounted how the CIS department had had such a tour at the Art Museum for the Frida Kalho exhibit and how much people had enjoyed it. Dr. Nachmias proposed a variation on the Christmas lecures in the UK. This would involve lectures during the Spring (and Winter) Break, where emeritus faculty would describe their own field for High School students interested in science. There was considerable discussion and it was resolved that Dr. Nachmias would head a committee to explore this avenue.
Committee Reports
Service
Drs. MacGregor and Deren reported that there had been no movement from the administration regarding their brochure for visiting Penn-associated personnel in the Hospital. They are still waiting for the lawyer’s approval.
Seminars
Dr. Winegrad re-iterated the seminars he has planned (see 18 October minutes) and added that he has recruited an individual in the Physiology Department who has traveled to the Himalayas to study blood doping and the molecular basis of muscular dystrophy.
Program
Dr. Steinberg reminded members of the PASEF program on 17 November in Claudia Cohen Hall. Also of the Holiday party on the 19th December on 21 Penn Tower. All members were encouraged to “bring a buddy” to the party. On 17 January there will be a Retirement Seminar and in March, although date is not yet fixed, Dr. Becca Levy will come for a talk. June 19th will be the End of Year party.
This was followed by general discussion regarding speakers for different events.
Communications
Dr. Myers has taken several photographs at the recent emeriti event and has posted them on the Website. He also reported that Roger Allen had tried to schedule several PASEF events at 21 Penn Tower but was unable to get the space he needed and has decided not to pursue having future PASEF meetings in the conference rooms on 21 Penn Tower.
New Business
Dr. Wehrli has sent an e-mail requesting that ASEF members might like to be a part of his NIH-funded study on peripheral vascular disease. He is calling for (elderly) normalage matched controls.. Although there was general agreement that this would not be a problem, he will be asked to clarify some of he requirements for participation.
Dr. Saunders has requested a careful, in depth review of the use of the space in 21 Penn Tower. His subcommittee will be convened to work on plans for utilization of this space. He has asked that time be dedicated on the next meeting agenda to discuss the use of the 21 Penn Tower space.
Discussion on the Holiday Party
The suggested that we invite all PASEF members to the Holiday Party was agreed to.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 pm Respectfully submitted Susan Heyner, Ph.D Secretary Treasurer
