The meeting was called to order by Dr. Kefalides at 12:10 pm. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
ASEF Scholarship Fund
Update on the ASEF Scholarship Fund: Dr. Goldfine presented an update on discussions with Lisa Katz of the SOM Development Office. She was looking into the past giving of ASEF members to the School. Dr. Steinberg asked whether the Development Office would be taking an administrative fee from the funds collected. Making an announcement about the establishment of the fund was being considered for the emeriti event on 10/26/10. Dr. Asbury commented that it may not be a good idea to compete with ongoing fund-raising efforts of the SOM.
Report from AROHE meeting
Dr. Kefalides attended the AROHE meeting held at Wesleyan College in Connecticut the previous week. He found it to be a very rewarding experience and commented on the camaraderie he found among those attending. Two lectures were of great interest. One presented by Becca Levy, Ph.D. of the Yale School of Public Health discussed the Longevity Revolution in America. While good health and long life are desirable, this can present a burden to society. Dr. Kefalides suggested inviting her to give a similar lecture to ASEF membership. Drs. Nachmias and Meadows suggested that we have people at Penn who would be qualified to speak on this topic and that this should be considered. Another talk of interest was presented by Janet Brown (Nick, could you provide more details on this?).
Dr. Kefalides mentioned his visit to the impressive Yale Retiree Center in connection with the AROHE meeting. He commented that it is stocked with a large collection of books published by Yale emeriti. Perhaps such a collection could be assembled for our headquarters?
Parking
Note that parking is available to emeriti at either "the regular rates, or at a reduced frequency for half the regular rate. Parking fees will in general be paid with post-tax dollars, unless you continue to have taxable income from the University". (From the Hitchhikers' Guide to Faculty Retirement).
Committee Reports
Service
ASEF Advocacy Committee. Dr. MacGregor reported that the committee now has eight members and is seeking more. They are developing a document that would be used as a standard way members could approach patients and a survey of all contacts made by committee members as part of their work.
Dr. Winegrad suggested that ASEF membership could offer to meet with medical students and provide the wisdom of their experience. Dr. Steinberg pointed out that there are existing courses as part of the curriculum where this is done.
Luncheon Seminars
Dr. Asbury reported that the luncheon seminars to-date have been well attended and were appreciated. The remainder of the program for the fall semester is set.
Program
Dr. Meadows reported that plans are going forward for the fall event honoring new retirees from the SOM. This will be held in the new Colket Building (CHOP) on 10/26/10 starting at 5:30 p.m. The program will consist of presentation of new retirees by Dr. Kefalides, a talk from Dr. Rubenstein, followed by a reception. Catering by Feast Your Eyes has been organized by Julian, Rachael and Dr. Meadows.

Education
Dr. Kefalides announced that the Education Committee has been renamed the Communications Committee with a new description of its activities. A new chair will be sought.
Dr. Seltzer discussed recent activities with regards to a Penn Retirement facility. No decisions have been reached, but the committee continues to work with the administration.
Next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 16, 2010 at noon.
