Location

Penn Tower 21

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Meadows at 12:10 p.m. The minutes of the June 19, 2012, meeting were approved.

The new ASEF Executive Council members who were present were introduced: Drs. Michael Broennle, Richard Salcido, and Yvonne Paterson. Dr. Julius Deren was introduced again. Dr. Ross Webber, current PASEF President, was also introduced.

President's Report

Dr. Meadows reported that Dr. Alan Myers has asked to be relieved of the duty of maintaining the ASEF website. He has grown tired of this task, after doing so first for PASEF, and then for ASEF. Dr. Meadows said that the Council members will need to identify a new volunteer to take on the job of Communications.

It was announced that Julian Pugh has left FAPD for the position of Faculty Affairs Manager in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care. FAPD hopes to hire a replacement for Julian soon. Interviews for this position are underway.

Julian's position in FAPD was Office Manager. The percentage of effort to support ASEF in Julian's former position was small. FAPD does not have the resources to "buy out" the other half of PASEF’s administrative coordinator's, Kayvon Nikoo, position because we only have enough money in our budget to afford one full-time Officer Manager. We can’t contribute for another half-time salary to support ASEF.

Dr. Webber said that Kayvon's half-time salary comes out of the PASEF budget. Dr. Meadows said that she will pursue getting a part-time person for ASEF, such as PASEF has in Kayvon. Vicki Mulhern suggested that Dr. Meadows meet with Dr. Lynn Hollen Lees, the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, and submit a proposal under the auspices of the University’s Diversity and Inclusion Plan. Vicki believes that ASEF can make the case that active aging faculty contribute to diversity at Penn.

Dr. Meadows has not yet met with Dean Jameson. She will schedule a meeting with him to determine what his plans are for ASEF. Dr. Salcido suggested that Dr. Meadows make a pitch to the Dean for a budget increase of $15,000, so that ASEF can afford to pay a part-time salary for their own administrator.

FAPD Report (Vicki Mulhern)

Vicki reported on the following:

  • The Part-Time Academic Clinician Track has been approved by the Provost's Office
  • The new Chair of Neurology has been named. She is Dr. Frances Jensen, who was recruited from Harvard University.
  • Dr. Mitch Schnall has been named the new Chair of Radiology.
  • The search for a new Chair of Neurosciences is nearing a conclusion.
  • The search for a new head of the Leonard Davis Institute/Orphan Disease Center is underway.
  • Dr. Robert Doms is the new Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at CHOP.
  • Dr. Lee Sweeney is stepping down as Chair of the Department of Physiology
  • The search for the new Chair of Pediatrics, and Pediatrician-in-Chief, at CHOP is nearing its conclusion.

Dr. Marjorie Bowman, former Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, has left Penn to assume the position of Dean of the Boonschoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Ohio. The interim Chair of Family Medicine and Community Health will be named soon.

The search for the new Vice Dean for Diversity and Inclusion is underway.  FAPD hosted the New Faculty Reception in September 2012. There are 160 new faculty members in the 2012-2013 academic year.

FAPD also hosted the Promoted Faculty Reception in September 2012.

The School of Medicine has undertaken a comprehensive review of the Clinician Educator (C-E) Track.

Dr. MacGregor stated that certain of his colleagues have lamented what they saw as major changes to the C-E Track. Vicki stated that one must produce scholarship in the C-E Track now. Dr. McCarthy said that it’s hard for faculty to make their clinical revenue the way the incentive programs are written now. If someone is listed at 80% clinical time, it is impossible to hit the established clinical revenue targets in that amount of time—so some faculty are doing clinical work during their protected “research” time.

Luncheon Programs

Dr. Bloch reported that Dr. Jane Floyd will present a luncheon program on October 10th; she will speak on the topic of photography in medicine.

Service Committee

Dr. MacGregor talked about the Penn patient visitation program. Drs. MacGregor and Deren visited nursing units in HUP last week and gave them copies of the brochure on this program. The visitation team has to be invited by the patient, or by the patient's family. The visitation program has about 7 people on call, but would like to have 12, so Dr. MacGregor asked for additional volunteers. Dr. Richard Salcido volunteered to help with this program.

Vicki Mulhern mentioned that the winner of UPHS' "Great Idea" contest recommended the development of a kiosk system to help patients navigate their way around UPHS’ hospitals. The development of this new wayfinding system should make it easier for patients to get around Penn hospitals.

Dr. Broennle asked Dr. Alan Myers to do a job description for the Communications position. Dr. Myers agreed to do so.

Program Committee

The Emeritus Reception will be held on 10/10/12. PASEF’s Emeritus Reception will be held on 11/1/12. ASEF's Holiday Party will be held on Tuesday, 12/18/12. The "Vicki and Hilary Show" (their joint retirement presentation) will be held on Valentine's Day, Thursday, February 14, 2013. ASEF’S Spring Symposium, with Dr. Ezekial Emanuel as the guest speaker, will be held in the BRB II/III Lobby/Auditorium on Thursday, April 25, 2013. And, finally, ASEF’s End-of-theAcademic Year social will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2013.

Dr. Jeanne Myers asked for a volunteer from the Council to help her get set up for the Emeritus reception. Dr. Meadows has created a PowerPoint presentation about ASEF to show at the reception. Dr. Meadows also mentioned that she would like to get a new computer for ASEF Headquarters. Vicki Mulhern said that she would talk to the PSOM IT Department to see if they may have a newer computer on hand (perhaps one that had been replaced by a user’s brand new computer) to give to ASEF.

Dr. Webber reported that Dr. Emanuel had to cancel the speech that he was to give at the 25-Year Club. Dr. Arnold Rosoff, from Wharton, stepped in to substitute for Dr. Emanuel. Dr. Webber also reported that PASEF recently had a wonderful luncheon program on the relative decline of the U.S. lifespan.

Upcoming PASEF luncheon programs include Dr. Martha Farrar from the Dept. of Psychology; Dr. Lou Girifalco will speak about the creation of ENIAC; and Dr. Lilliane Weisberg will speak about wealthy Jews in Nazi Germany. PASEF is also offering an outing to the Barnes Foundation. The cost to visit the Barnes Foundation is quite high, however—Dr. Webber reported that for $20/per person, visitors get a headset and may go on a self-guided tour; for $40/person, visitors are given a headset, go on a self-guided tour, and are shown a film; and for $60/person, the Barnes will give you a guided tour.

Dr. Meadows mentioned that she would be at the AROHE meeting on October 23rd, the next scheduled meeting date for ASEF's Executive Council, so the decision was made to change the date of the meeting to Tuesday, October 30th.

The meeting ended at 1:25 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Rachael J. Berget FAPD
