Jurassic Park on the Schuylkill

Since the theatrical release of Jurassic Park in 1993, the thought of reviving long-extinct creatures has been a part of popular culture. César de la Fuente, PhD, a Presidential Assistant Professor in Psychiatry, Microbiology, Chemistry and Biomolecular Engineering, and Bioengineering, coined the term “molecular de-extinction” to refer to the novel work of his lab’s transdisciplinary methods to utilize artificial intelligence and machine learning to locate new candidates for antibiotic research, including molecules that were once buried in permafrost for thousands of years.
