The Institute for Immunology and Immune Health (I3H)

The immune system plays an integral role in nearly every medical malady, from infectious diseases like COVID-19 and autoimmune conditions like multiple sclerosis, to cancer and neurological disorders. Thus, it is critically important to fund and operate research centers that focus on developing broad and deep immune profiling that can be translated into clinically actionable tools for physicians and their patients.

To this end, the University of Pennsylvania, a first mover in immunological research, has merged its Institute for Immunology (IFI) with Penn Medicine’s Immune Health (IH) organization to establish the Institute for Immunology & Immune Health (I3H).

Advancing the Bench-to-Bedside Pipeline

Led by John Wherry, PhD, and Allie Greenplate, PhD, I3H combines Penn’s leadership in basic discovery immunology with translational research and the advanced infrastructure to scale and integrate knowledge into the electronic medical record. I3H creates a seamless channel through which to drive novel strategies for diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease. Comprising three divisions, Clinical Studies, Platform Assays, and Informatics, I3H consolidates the resources of a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team whose expertise spans every step of the research process. With state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technologies, like single-cell RNA sequencing, ATAC-seq, flow cytometry, and innovative sample collection and data analysis tools, I3H is accelerating scientific discovery at a pace unachievable by a single laboratory.
