Resident and Medical Student Electives
The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Elective is offered to medical students and residents who are interested in learning more about this unique field. This elective is catered to the learner's schedule and can range from 1-4 weeks long.
During the rotation, your focus will be learning the fundamentals of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and diving medicine.
You will evaluate patients with the fellows and attending, discuss the benefits and risks of hyperbaric therapy, and practice assessing divers and utilizing dive tables. This is open to Penn trainees as well as visiting trainees.
Course Goals
- Acquire basic understanding of the fundamental effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy including physiologic response and therapeutic benefit.
- Acquire basic knowledge of both monoplace and multiplace hyperbaric chamber operations and safety.
- Acquire basic knowledge of the indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
- Acquire basic understanding of the physiologic effects of the undersea environment and their relationship to fitness to dive.
