Vice Chair for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity

 

Dr. Carmen Guerra is an Professor of Medicine and, the Chair of the Vice Chairs of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DE&I).  Since 2016, Dr. Guerra has served as the Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine (DOM). Dr. Guerra chairs the DOM Anti-racism and Health Equity committee and provides leadership to the Vice Chiefs of DE&I in the DOM as they each develop DE&I strategic plans for each of their divisions.  Dr. Guerra is a Diversity Search Advisor for the DOM and provides unconscious bias training and other support to search committees.  In 2018, Dr. Guerra established a new pipeline programs for underrepresented minority medical students who are interested in  health services research.  In 2015, Dr. Guerra also established the Dr. Edward S. Cooper leadership development program for women and underrepresented minority faculty at PSOM which has trained over 120 faculty.

Dr. Guerra’s research focuses on health equity in cancer screening.  She has developed navigation programs for underserved populations that have screened approximately 5000 individuals at Penn Medicine and have identified cancer at earlier, more treatable stages.
