Patient Placement

Evaluations of Patient Placement Criteria

A number of criteria have been developed to place patients with substance use disorders in optimal levels of care at the beginning of treatment. One of these patient placement systems, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria, is widely used in the U.S. Investigators in this Center have conducted several studies of the predictive validity of such patient placement systems, by determining whether patients who are correctly matched to level of care, according to the criteria, have better treatment outcomes than patients who are “mismatched.”
