"Collaborative and discovery-driven science learning: connecting Penn students, high school students, and our urban environment.”

Douglas J. Jerolmack, PhD

Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Endowed Term Professor of Earth and Environmental Science, University of Pennsylvania

The Graduate Certificate in Community-Engaged STEM is designed to complement a student’s disciplinary training by adding the community perspective and practical skills needed to engage with members of the public on vital issues.  Incorporating coursework, research, and community engagement, students will gain both an enriched understanding of relevant topics, as well as significant experience in working with non-academic stakeholders.  The training is meant for a broader spectrum of career paths, as well as benefitting traditional medical and academic positions.  The research, training, and real-life lessons gained from completing this Certificate will provide experience in developing productive relationships between the university and community partners. This experience will enhance pedagogical and communication skills as trainees work with community groups with different levels of STEM background. In addition, students will deepen their understanding of how their scholarship connects with society.

The program is open to students already enrolled in medical school or a STEM graduate program at the University of Pennsylvania.
