Student Spotlight: Talayah Johnson

Talayah Evans in lab

I am a Bioengineering Ph.D. student at PENN. My research is focused on how mechanical forces influence Achilles tendon and meniscus growth during early development.  I am a lead mentor for FERS which exposes underrepresented freshman students at PENN to research. Additionally, I help organize "Learning on a Limb," a program introducing Philadelphia high school students to musculoskeletal research through hands-on experiments. I’ve collaborated with a PENN neuroscience course to host 50 Paul Robeson High School students for a lab tour. My community-engaged STEM project expands on this work. I work with Imhotep high school's STEM program where students immerse themselves in these life-changing, global projects. My role is to help the students build a 3D-printed prosthetic limb that they take to Ghana each year.

I am honored to have received the university’s 2024 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Involvement Award, recognizing a graduate student whose outreach emulates the ideals of MLK. I will continue to use my position to inspire minority students to pursue their dreams by means of furthering their education in STEM fields.
