Interest in Inclusion and Diversity
As the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, I provide leadership for the Program for Diversity and Inclusion (PDI) housed in the Academic Programs Office of the Perelman School of Medicine. With specific attention to our medical students, the PDI works to: (i) promote medical student diversity; (ii) provide emotional support, advising and mentoring; (iii) facilitate the cohesion and capacity of our medical student cultural affinity groups; and (iv) enable opportunities for student involvement in community health and engagement.
- Medical student diversity
- Medical student and resident trainee education around physician professionalism and humanism, with a particular focus on issues of cultural humility
- Housestaff diversity in the Department of medicine
- UIM faculty development
I continue to maintain a program of independently funded bench research. Through my laboratory, and in my role as the PI of a NIH R25 funded grant for short-term research, I provide opportunities for bench research experiences for undergraduate and medical students student from groups that are underrepresented in medicine. I also have a longstanding interest in spirituality and medicine, particularly at end-of-life, and have developed curricula and other educational initiatives in this area for medical students and residents.
