Biobanking Core

The role of the PenNSAM biobank is to support the Penn and CHOP research communities by providing centralized access to samples with annotated clinical metadata related to studies in human nutrition.

The PenNSAM Biobanking Core collects, stores, manages and distributes human biospecimens collected under Investigator-Initiated, Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved protocols related to nutrition studies.  Specimens routinely stored include frozen and fixed tissues, lamina propria mononuclear cells (LPMCs), intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), plasma, serum, peripheral monocuclear cells (PBMCs), swabs and bodily fluids such as urine and stool.  Onsite, PenNSAM houses – 80˚C freezers, an electric – 140˚C freezer and multiple large dewars for the cryopreservation of live cells, with the availability of long-term storage offsite.  Guidance on standard operating procedures for sampling and storage, as well as assistance in the management of stool, processing of serum, plasma, and buffy coat fractions from whole blood are available.  Dispensation of samples will be executed per the PenNSAM data and biospecimen sharing agreement. 

 

The Core has aligned with the university-based LabVantage Laboratory Information System (LIMS) to integrate its current biobanking database platform via 2-D barcoding of samples.
