Projects supported by PenNSAM designed to build a community of researchers interested in advancing the knowledge of mechanisms involved in the effects of diet and nutrition on human health. These projects involve both medical nutrition, focused on the treatment of disease through diet, as well as preventative nutrition, designed to reduce the risk for the development of disease.

A list of topics supported by PenNSAM:
  • Medical nutrition—Malnutrition and medical/surgical outcomes (AI in medical imaging)

  • AI and big data analytics in nutritional science

  • Development of new tools in nutritional assessments (dietary screeners)

  • Development of platforms in the EHR to collect and analyze clinical nutrition data (nutrition registry and nutrition navigator)

  • Diet, Nutrition, and NAFLD (genomics and lipidomics)

  • Diet and the Gut Microbiome (IGRAM and dietary xenobiotic studies)

  • Diet, nutrition, and immune function

  • Diet, nutrition, and short gut/small intestinal bacterial growth (MOTIFS study)
