Walking Directions

From 36th & Spruce

Walk south down 36th, in the direction of the hospitals. When the path ends, turn right. Turn left at the Robert Wood Johnson Pavilion and proceed through the Pavilion. Turn right at the Nursing Education Building. Turn left once you've passed the building, then go straight down the stairs and the Biomedical Research Building will be directly in front of you.

 

Driving Directions

From Northeastern Areas

From I-95 South, take the Vine St./ Center City Exit, stay left to 676 West (Vine St. Expressway). Follow the expressway to the I-76 East Exit (International Airport). Follow I-76 to Exit 40, South St. (exit from left lane). At the top of the exit ramp, turn right onto South Street. Follow the "Directions from I-76," below.

From the West or North

Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Valley Forge, Exit 24. Take I-76 East approximately 17 miles to Exit 40, South St. (exit from left lane). Turn right onto South St. Follow the "Directions from I-76," below.

From the South

Take I-95 North to Exit 11 for I-76 West/Center City Philadelphia. Merge right to exit for Center City. Cross the Bridge and turn left at the light to I-76 West. After one mile, merge onto I-76 West to Exit 40, South St. (exit from left lane). Turn left onto South St. Follow the "Directions from I-76," below.

From New Jersey

Take the New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 3, then the Black Horse Pike (Rte. 168 North) for one mile to I-295 South. Go one mile to Exit 26, I-76 West to the Walt Whitman Bridge. Cross the Bridge onto I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway) to Exit 40, South St. (exit from left lane). Turn left onto South St. Follow the "Directions from I-76," below.

Alternate Route from New Jersey and points East

Take the Benjamin Franklin Bridge to 676 West (Vine St. Expressway), to I-76 East. Follow signs for International Airport to Exit 40, South St. (exit from left lane). Follow the "Directions from I-76," below.

From Montgomery County Pennsylvania

Take I-76 East to Exit 40, South St. (exit from the left lane). Turn right onto South St. Follow the "Directions from I-76," below.

From Center City

Travel west on Market or Walnut St. to 34th St. Turn left on 34th St. As you cross Spruce Street and pass the hospital, the road bends to the right and becomes Civic Center Boulevard. Follow Civic Center Boulevard around the bend, past the hospital entrances. At the second traffic light, turn right onto Ossler circle. Biomedical Research Building 2/3 is the second building on your left.

From West Philadelphia

Travel east on Chestnut or Spruce St. to 34th St. Turn right onto 34th St. As you cross Spruce Street and pass the hospital, the road bends to the right and becomes Civic Center Boulevard. Follow Civic Center Boulevard around the bend, past the hospital entrances. At the second traffic light, turn right onto Ossler circle. Biomedical Research Building 2/3 is the second building on your left.

From Northeast Philadelphia

Take Roosevelt Blvd. to I-76 East. Exit from the left lane at Exit 40, South St. Turn right onto South St. Follow the "Directions from I-76," below.

Directions from I-76 South Street Exit

If you need to park your car: Stay straight on South Street going west (it will become Spruce St. at 33rd). Turn right on 38th Street. Just after crossing Walnut Street, enter the parking garage on the right. To reach BGS from the parking lot, take 38th Street in the direction from which you came. Turn left on Spruce Street. At 36th, turn right and follow the "Walking Directions from 36th & Spruce" above.

If you are heading directly to BGS: At the first traffic light on South Street, turn left onto Convention Avenue. Follow Convention Avenue around the bend and proceed to the traffic light. Turn left onto Civic Center Boulevard. Follow Civic Center Boulevard around the bend. At the second traffic light, turn right onto Ossler Circle. Biomedical Research Building 2/3 is the second building on your left.

 

Parking

Parking in the area surrounding Penn-BGS can be difficult. Space is generally available at the University of Pennsylvania Walnut 38 lot at the corner of Walnut and 38th Street (215-898-8667). For more information on lot locations and daily rates, please click here.

Somewhat closer to Biomedical Research Building, there are parking meter kiosks on 38th street. The kiosks permit parking for 2 or 3 hours, they charge $.25 per 15 minutes, and in addition to coins and Smart Cards, bills and credit cards may be used for payment at these devices.

 

Transportation from Philadelphia International Airport

Driving

All major car rental companies are located at the airport. Take I-95 North to Exit 11 for I-76 West/Center City Philadelphia. Merge right to exit for Center City. Cross the Bridge and turn left at the light to I-76 West. After one mile, merge onto I-76 West to Exit 40, South St. (exit from left lane). Turn left onto South St.

Airport Express Train

Leaves every half hour at 10 minutes and 40 minutes past the hour, arrives at University City Station on the Medical Center campus. The train costs about $5 and takes 20 minutes.

At the University City Station, use the exit labeled "To Hospital" (not the exit labeled "To University"). Head to your left on Convention Avenue, and follow Convention Avenue around the bend and proceed to the traffic light. Turn left onto Civic Center Boulevard. Follow Civic Center Boulevard around the bend. At the second traffic light, turn right onto Ossler circle. Biomedical Research Building 2/3 is the second building on your left.

Lady Liberty Limousine 215-222-8888

This shuttle leaves the Airport every 7-8 minutes and will stop at the Penn Tower Hotel. The one way fare is $10 and the ride takes 20 minutes. From the front of the hotel, turn left onto Civic Center Boulevard. Follow Civic Center Boulevard around the bend. At the first traffic light, turn right onto Ossler circle. Biomedical Research Building 2/3 is the second building on your left.

Taxi

From the airport, a metered cab costs about $30 and the ride takes about 20 minutes. It might help to tell the driver that Biomedical Research Building 2/3 is on the University of Pennsylania Medical Campus, across Ossler pavilion from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)'s Wood Building.

The driver should exit I-76 at the South Street exit, make a left on Civic Center Blvd., follow this around the bend (past the hospital entrances), and turn right at the first traffic light onto Ossler circle. Biomedical Research Building 2/3 would be the second building on the left.

 

Public Transportation

AMTRAK 1-800-872-7245, 215-824-1600

All Amtrak Northeast corridor trains stop at 30th Street Station. Biomedical Graduate Studies is about 12 blocks from 30th Street Station.

Taxi from 30th Street Station: A metered cab costs about $5.00 and the ride should take about 5 minutes. The cab might take 34th street to Civic Center Boulevard. In that case, the driver should follow Civic Center Boulevard around the bend (past the hospital entrances), and turn right at the first traffic light onto Ossler circle. Biomedical Research Building 2/3 would be the second building on the left.

Alternatively, the cab might take 38th street to University Ave, and turn left onto Currie Boulevard. In that case, Biomedial Research Building 2/3 is on the right, at the first corner.

Walking from 30th Street Station: Exit the station and walk parallel to it in the direction where there are streets (as opposed to a highway). Cross Market and Chesnut Streets to reach Walnut street. Turn right on Walnut, and proceed to 33rd street. Turn left on 33rd. Thirty-third Street will divert you onto 34th Street. As you cross Spruce Street and pass Pennsylvania Hospital, the road bends to the right and becomes Civic Center Boulevard. Follow Civic Center Boulevard around the bend, past the hospital entrances. At the first traffic light, turn right onto Ossler circle. Biomedical Research Building 2/3 is the second building on your left.

Bus and railroad from 30th Street Station: The No. 30 bus runs from the station to campus. Or from 30th St Station, one may take the R1, R2 or R3 railroad lines (service at least every 30 minutes) one stop to the University City Station. The train fare is $2.25 and the ride is approx. 3 minutes.

At the University City Station, use the exit labeled "To Hospital" (not the exit labeled "To University"). Head to your left on Convention Avenue, and follow Convention Avenue around the bend and proceed to the traffic light. Turn left onto Civic Center Boulevard. SEPTA Regional Rail Lines 215-580-7800

The R1 Airport, R2 Marcus Hook-Wilmington, R3 Media-Elwyn and most Glenside-Jenkintown, R2 Warminster and R3 West Trenton trains provide direct service to the University City Station on the Medical Center campus. From other Regional Rail lines, get to the University City Station by transferring to the R1, R2, or R3 at 30th Street or Market East stations. There is no additional charge for the transfer; your train ticket is your transfer.

At the University City Station, use the exit labeled "To Hospital" (not the exit labeled "To University"). Head to your left on Convention Avenue, and follow Convention Avenue around the bend and proceed to the traffic light. Turn left onto Civic Center Boulevard. SEPTA City Trains and Trolleys 215-580-7800

The SEPTA Market/Frankford Blue Line (the elevated train/subway) stops at 34th and Market Sts. Walk South on 34th (crossing Ludlow). As you cross Spruce Street and pass Pennsylvania Hospital, the road bends to the right and becomes Civic Center Boulevard. Follow Civic Center Boulevard around the bend, past the hospital entrances. At the second traffic light, turn right onto Ossler circle. Biomedical Research Building 2/3 is the second building on your left.

All SEPTA Subway/Surface Green Line trolleys except the Number 10 stop at 37th and Spruce streets. Walk west on Spruce to 38th Street. Turn left on 38th. Bear left onto University. At the traffic light, turn left onto Curie Boulevard. Biomedical Medical Research Building 2/3 is on your right at the first Stop sign.

If you take the Number 10 trolley, travel to 36th and Sansom streets. Walk west on Sansom to 38th Street. Turn left on 38th. Bear left onto University. At the traffic light, turn left onto Curie Boulevard. Biomedical Medical Research Building 2/3 is on your right at the first Stop sign.
