Epic Consenting

About

Consents may built within PennChart and be obtained, documented through PennChart workflows. This is different from sending a link to an e-consent document or workflow through email communication using MyPennMedicine.

Consider these before choosing:

  • Tool is best for studies where the patients are going to be seen in person for a consent visit.

  • Consent document can be built into PennChart and signed off on a tablet. This is then stored as part of the patients EMR record.

  • IRB approval required before use by participants.

  • Consent and other source documents all in one place.

  • Part of regular EMR workflows.

  • This method is not advisable if your study or patient requires their Legally Authorized Representative (LAR) to consent.

  • No cost associated but your study does need to be built in PennChart
  • Tool is HIPAA compliant, consent lives within the patient's medical record.
  • Needs patient associated to the study built within PennChart
  • Research team must use tablet or other hospital device to administer consent.

Consents need to be built by the PennChart research team. Please contact if you are interested PennChartResearch@uphs.upenn.edu

Access

It is required that users of this method have PennChart access, and have their studies built in PennChart.

Epic / PennChart consent and Part 11 compliance

Epic has released a white paper that describes how their system functionality can meet part 11 compliance. At this time, PennChart is not considered part 11 compliant at Penn.
