BIO STATEMENT
I am an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania Scheie Eye Institute. I have been actively involved in community and global health work throughout my education and training. My experiences working abroad inspired me to pursue a fellowship in Academic Global Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital. Through the fellowship I had the opportunity to care for underserved patients in Philadelphia and abroad - including Jamaica, Peru, Ecuador, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and India. My interests include - surgical teaching, development of sustainable eyecare models, providing subspecialty eyecare in low resource areas.
Recent Global Health Projects
Serabu Eye Clinic, Southern Eye Institute - through my fellowship, I spent 4 weeks in Sierra Leone to support and further develop the efforts of the Serabu Eye Clinic. I worked alongside local clinic staff to provide eyecare to patients in southern Sierra Leone and from surrounding countries. I worked with clinic staff to improve clinic efficiency, improve screening for vision-threatening diseases, and to improve post-operative care protocols. I have continued my involvement with the Southern Eye Institute and serve as medical staff and as an advisory board member.
Arequipa, Peru - I continue to work with MMI Peru to provide sustainable eyecare in Arequipa, Peru. Though modern eyecare is available throughout parts of Peru, it is still inaccessible to many due to cost. Access to eyecare for these patients is limited. Mission trip models of surgical care originating in developed countries are common but outcomes and limited post-operative care raise valid concerns. MMI Peru has developed an eye clinic and eyeglass shop that provides year round care using a subsidized cost model. They also partner with international medical teams to provide surgical care while ensuring the highest level of quality.
