Virginia M.Y. Lee, PhD and John Q. Trojanowski, MD, PhD, partners in life and in science for nearly four decades, have long been recognized as trailblazers in the field of neurodegenerative disease research. Through their groundbreaking studies at the University of Pennsylvania, they made key discoveries on the misfolded proteins that impact the advancement of conditions such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal degeneration (FTD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Their contributions to the field include landmark discoveries identifying several proteins that form pathological aggregates in neurodegenerative diseases such as tau in neurofibrillary tangles associated with AD and FTD, alpha-synuclein in Lewy bodies associated with PD and Lewy body dementia (LBD), and TDP-43 protein in inclusions associated with FTD and ALS.
