Carl F. Schmidt Honorary Lecture
Carl F. Schmidt, M.D. was a revered member of the Department. Following his internship at HUP in 1919, he accepted the offer of Instructor in Pharmacology from A.N. Richards. Dr. Schmidt subsequently spent two years in China where, along with K. K. Chen, he discovered the sympathomimetic alkaloid, ephedrine. He returned to the faculty at Penn in 1924 and, thereafter, focused his research efforts on the actions of drugs on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Dr. Schmidt was appointed Department Chairman in 1939 and served in this role until 1959. He was an admired and respected teacher, who inspired students and colleagues alike.Dr. Schmidt was the recipient of numerous awards and honors and was the 1st Annual Carl F. Schmidt Lecturer.
