Large Animal Imaging Facility (LAIF)

Mission

The goal of the Large Animal Imaging Facility (LAIF) is to advance and facilitate large animal research with an emphasis on imaging.  Another objective is to facilitate the translation from animal imaging studies to human imaging studies. LAIF assists Investigators in navigating through the processes related to gaining access and support for their large animal research studies inside the Radiology Department. LAIF primarily operates out of the Smilow center, but also has access to CAMRIS-managed facilities at HUP for large animal scans.

Application and Study Start Up

All large animal research studies must submit an application for LAIF review prior to scanning. You can find the LAIF redcap application here: LAIF application

Documents required include:

  1. IACUC Form A (Animal)

  2. IACUC Approval Letter (Animal)

  3. MR Imaging Protocol and/or Manual (Animal)

  4. Specimen Documents (if applicable)

Once completed, the documents will be reviewed, and a member of LAIF will reach out to the study team to discuss next steps. If you will be scanning in a CAMRIS-managed facility, LAIF will connect you with CAMRIS for additional start up requirements.

Please note: All animal studies scanning in a CAMRIS-managed facility (HUP5, HUP6, PAV10, SC3T, SC7T) must follow CAMRIS scheduling and occupancy rules as outlined in Policy # 101 and # 201, available here: CAMRIS Policies.

Rates and Billing

Please refer to the CAMRIS rate sheet to view the costs associated with animal scanning. Billing is time-based and is managed through the PathBio Research (PBR) calendar and billing tool. Your study must be properly configured in the PBR tools to ensure proper billing.

Animal Research Personnel Requirements

If you will be participating in MR imaging within the LAIF facilities, please complete the Research MRI Screening for Animal Research Personnel form. Other required documents include:

  • MRI Basic Safety Training Certificate

    • Please access this training session through Knowledge Link

    • Once logged in, search for «MRI Basic Safety Training — RAD» in the box titled «Find Learning»
