MRI Research Safety Training
Please refer to CAMRIS SOP 303: Safety Certification of Staff Entering Research MRI Facilities for our safety training policy.
MRI Safety
CAMRIS is committed to the safety of all individuals entering research MRI facilities. All staff operating in a CAMRIS-managed research MRI facility are required to undergo Level 1 MRI safety training. This includes an annual online workday training and an in-person site-specific safety orientation to learn emergency response procedures for each space. Individuals that wish to independently operate the MRI scanner must complete the Level 1 and 2 training and require additional knowledge and skills as outlined in CAMRIS SOP 303.
Level 1 Certification Process
Online Training
All staff operating in a CAMRIS-managed research MRI environment must complete the online training annually. The training can be found in workday learning under “MRI Safety Training – Level 1”. Note: UPHS-only staff must request an account to access workday learning by submitting a Solution Center ticket.
Instructions for how to access the workday training are available here:
Site-Specific Training
To be granted access to a research MRI location, study staff must attend an in-person, site-specific orientation with CAMRIS staff. To get started, please file a Request Level 1 or 2 Certification ticket at the CAMRIS Help Center. You will be asked to attach a copy of your Level 1 online training certificate, and to complete and attach the non-patient MRI Screening Form. A member of the CAMRIS team will respond to the ticket and will notify you of the next available training date. Once the online and site-specific trainings are complete, CAMRIS will grant badge access to the appropriate MRI facility.
Level 2 Certification Process
Online Training
All individuals who wish to operate the scanner independently in either a CAMRIS-managed research MRI facility or a clinical MRI facility during times made available for research, must complete an online training annually. The training can be found in workday learning under “MRI Safety Training – Level 2”. Note: UPHS-only staff must request an account to access workday learning by submitting a Solution Center ticket.
Instructions for how to access the workday training are available here:
In-Person Exam with CAMRIS Staff
In addition to the online training, all individuals who wish to become a Level 2 operator must pass an in-person exam with a CAMRIS staff member. During the exam, the Level 2 operator will be asked to scan a human participant while under supervision. The CAMRIS staff will observe the operator’s knowledge of the CAMRIS check-in process, proper participant screening and setup, and awareness of safety and emergency response procedures. Please note the exam is NOT a teaching session. Staff should come prepared with the knowledge and competencies outlined in the MRI Level 2 Exam Checklist and described in CAMRIS SOP 201: Operational Responsibilities of Independent Scanner Operators.
It is expected that staff will receive mentoring and training from their research labs prior to the exam. It is also an expectation that each lab will provide a human participant for scanning during the exam. To schedule your in-person exam, please submit a 'Request Level 1 or 2 Certification’ ticket at the CAMRIS Help Center, and a member of the CAMRIS staff will work with you to identify a mutually agreed upon date for the exam.
