I take great pride in announcing this year's recipients of the Penn Medicine Awards of Excellence. The distinguished awardees exemplify our profession's highest values of scholarship and teaching, innovation, commitment to service, leadership, and dedication to patient care. They epitomize the preeminence we all strive to achieve. The awardees range from those at the beginning of their highly promising careers to those whose distinguished work has spanned decades. The 2014 award recipients are:

Research

  • William Osler Patient Oriented Research Award to James M. Wilson, MD, PhD, of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
  • Samuel Martin Health Evaluation Sciences Research Award to Rachel M. Werner, MD, PhD, of the Department of Medicine.
  • Michael S. Brown New Investigator Research Award to Ekaterina L. Grishchuk, PhD, of the Department of Physiology.
  • Marjorie A. Bowman New Investigator Research Award to Victoria A. Miller, PhD, of the Department of Pediatrics at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
  • The Lady Barbara Colyton Prize for Autoimmune Research to James L. Riley, PhD, of the Department of Microbiology.

  • I.S. Ravdin Master Clinician Award to L. Scott Levin, MD, FACS, of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
  • Louis Duhring Outstanding Clinical Specialist Award to Lynn M. Schuchter, MD, of the Department of Medicine.
  • Sylvan Eisman Outstanding Primary Care Physician Award to Eliot H. Nierman, MD, of the Department of Medicine.
  • Luigi Mastroianni, Jr., Clinical Innovator Award to David A. Asch, MD, MBA, of the Department of Medicine and Kevin G.M. Volpp, MD, PhD, of the Department of Medicine.
  • Alfred Stengel Health System Champion Award to Daniel M. Feinberg, MD, FAAN, of the Department of Neurology.

Mentoring

  • Arthur K. Asbury Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award to J. Richard Landis, BsEd, MS, PhD, of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology.

Teaching

  • The Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching to Lisa M. Bellini, MD, of the Department of Medicine; and Grant T. Liu, MD, of the Department of Neurology.
  • Leonard Berwick Memorial Teaching Award to David J. Margolis, MD, PhD, of the Department of Dermatology and Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology; and Eric D. Marsh, MD, PhD, of the Department of Neurology at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
  • Robert Dunning Dripps Memorial Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education to E. Cabrina Campbell, MD, of the Department of Psychiatry at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center.
  • Jane M. Glick Graduate Student Teaching Award to Hongzhe Li (Lee), PhD, of the Department Biostatistics and Epidemiology; and James M. Wilson, MD, PhD, of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
  • Provost's Award for Teaching Excellence by Non-Standing Faculty to Richard Summers, MD, of the Department of Psychiatry.

Each recipient was chosen by a committee of distinguished faculty from the Perelman School of Medicine or the University. The contributions of these clinicians and scientists exemplify the outstanding quality of patient care, mentoring, research, and teaching of our world-class faculty.
