Dear Faculty, Students and Staff,

I write to highlight two upcoming events that capture our scientific community’s tremendous intellectual excitement at its very best. I hope you will join me for both the BGS@30 Anniversary Weekend October 8-10 and the ITMAT 10th Annual International Symposium October 12-13. Each program features a roster of talent that could be assembled no place other than Penn.

The BGS@30 program, specially organized to commemorate 30 years of interdisciplinary doctoral training at Penn, features scientific talks by BGS alumni, faculty, current students, and outside speakers. On Friday (October 9), keynote scientific talks will be delivered by Anthony Fauci, MD, Eve Marder, PhD, Aaron Gitler, PhD, and our own Sarah Tishkoff, PhD, and Carl June, MD. The weekend also includes career panels and a career fair and will be a wonderful opportunity for networking and socializing.

As we have come to expect from ITMAT, participants in the 10th Annual International Symposium are outstanding scientists from Penn and leading institutions across the country and around the world. The theme of this year’s symposium, “Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics,” reflects the incredible pace of translation science at home and abroad. Topics include The Evolving Search for Drug Targets, Big Data and the Phenome, Systems Approaches to Pharmacology, Variability in the Pathogenesis of Disease, and Emerging Therapeutic Paradigms in Cancer.

I encourage you to take advantage of the unique opportunities for learning and community building that both these programs represent. If you have not already made plans to attend, you can learn more about the BGS@30 program and register here, and the ITMAT Symposium here.

I look forward to seeing you at these terrific events.

With best regards,
