We are pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Mitchell Schnall for a second six-year term as Chair of the Department of Radiology. This reappointment follows a review process that included an extensive self-study, followed by an internal committee review and an external review by three leaders in the radiology field. This process affirmed that, under Dr. Schnall’s leadership, the Department of Radiology is on an exceptional trajectory, with strong nationally recognized programs across all areas of the academic and clinical missions.

The Department provides exceptional patient care across the range of clinical services. The review affirmed that during Dr. Schnall’s tenure as Chair, the Department has been positioned very well.   The Department is advancing integration of its services, including the establishment of service lines, standardization of protocols, template reporting, progress in system-wide subspecialty reading, and formation of the Community Practice Division.

The Department’s research programs were also highly praised in the review. Extramural research awards have increased to $34M in FY17, the highest in the Department’s history, placing it 2nd nationally in research funding.  Areas of strength include leading programs in image analytics and informatics; quantitative imaging; and molecular imaging and image-guided therapy, including the development of PET radiopharmaceuticals.

In the education domain, the Department’s elective for 3rd and 4th year medical students has received the highest score of any course at PSOM. The HUP radiology residency program is considered one of the top 5 radiology residencies in the country, and the Department’s subspecialty fellowships are highly competitive.

We look forward to working with Dr. Schnall during his second term to foster continued progress and innovation, and ask that you join us in congratulating him on his reappointment.
