It is with appreciation that we write to inform you that Chyke Doubeni, MD, MPH, FRCS, will be stepping down from his role as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, effective August 1, 2018.  Continuing as a faculty member in the Perelman School of Medicine, Dr. Doubeni plans to take a sabbatical to develop exciting new areas in population health that build upon his robust research program.

Under Dr. Doubeni’s leadership, the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health has been on a solid trajectory of growth across all mission areas. Consolidating our West Philadelphia clinical practice sites at Penn Medicine at University City and our administrative offices at the renovated Mutch building was a critical first step in restructuring the department. Its new practice in Pennsylvania Hospital is expanding access to care and provides new training opportunities for our students, residents, and fellows. The Department has spearheaded innovative population health programs and strengthened Penn Medicine’s engagement with the West Philadelphia community.

In addition to expanding access to care, the Department has worked collaboratively to advance many important Penn Medicine initiatives.  These include e-Refill, the Primary Care Service Line, and Comprehensive Primary Care plus. The Department also drives innovative research in the area of health disparities, while its Center for Integrated Behavioral Health in Primary Care leads national efforts to train primary care clinicians in integrated behavioral health models.

The Department is well positioned for success in the years to come. Please join us in thanking Dr. Doubeni for his leadership, as we begin the process to identify a successor.
