We are pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Michael S. Parmacek for a second six-year term as Chair of the Department of Medicine. The reappointment follows a review process that included an extensive self-study, internal committee review, and external review by three leaders in academic medicine.

With strong nationally recognized programs across all areas of its clinical and academic missions, the Department of Medicine (DOM) is recognized as one of the finest in the country. It is home to more than 625 distinguished faculty members across 12 Divisions, along with over 170 residents and more than 140 fellows in training.

The review affirmed that under Dr. Parmacek’s impactful and forward-looking leadership the DOM provides exceptional patient care across the range of clinical services, which have expanded considerably over the last six years. At the same time, the DOM, in partnership with the Service Lines, has achieved impressive safety and quality measures and has been a leader in clinical care innovation strategies.

Under Dr. Parmacek’s Penn Scholars in Medicine program, the DOM has promoted biomedical discovery and established a pipeline of outstanding physician scientists in the Department.  With a grant funding portfolio that exceeds all other Departments at Penn, the DOM’s research programs are exceptional. One-third of DOM faculty members are actively engaged in research, with tangible impact on DOM’s recognition, both within and beyond the University. DOM investigators publish numerous high-impact papers and have developed many innovative therapies derived directly from these seminal studies.

In the education domain, DOM faculty routinely receive superior student evaluations. The medical school and residency programs are excellent and among the most sought-after in the country.

We look forward to working with Dr. Parmacek and his team to further enhance the Department’s preeminence, and ask that you join us in congratulating him on his reappointment.
