Announcing the Penn Medicine Strategic Planning Process
November 15, 2022
Dear Penn Medicine Community,
We are writing to share with you the exciting news that Penn Medicine is beginning a strategic planning process to guide our school and health system through its next five years. Together, we will create a set of inspiring goals and institutional priorities that align our mission and values, and broadly communicate our aspirations.
Our current strategic plan was conceived in 2017. We see the fruits of that plan, and the plans before it, everywhere we look in our organization: new buildings, new programs, new partnerships, and new ways to advance our missions in clinical care, research, training, and our community connections. Thanks to your collective efforts, the Perelman School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania Health System are in strong positions today.
Yet, the world of today was unimaginable in 2017. The pandemic has headlined this change, but change has been more far-reaching. We now sit at a strategic inflection point, a time of opportunity and deep consideration for the ways in which hospitals and medical schools can make a difference. For Penn, this has been a time of unprecedented discovery, productivity, and community engagement.
At this moment in history, we are an indispensable institution.
Today we announce the launch of Penn Medicine’s strategic planning for 2023-2028: Serving a Changing World. The effort will bring us together around two central questions: What does the world need from Penn Medicine, and how can we provide it?
Our process will unfold through the work of five groups focused on aspects of our clinical, educational, and research missions, our efforts to serve our environment, community, and people, and our foundational commitment to humanity and equity. Each group is led by two co-chairs and consists of faculty, staff, students, and other key stakeholders who broadly represent our large and diverse institution and the capabilities we can bring to our missions.

We expect these groups to work into next spring toward a plan that can begin to be implemented as soon as July 1, 2023. We will be calling on many of you for thoughts and contributions and welcome them at any time. The University is renewing its strategic planning at the same time, and we will be coordinated with that effort.
It is true that so many of us have felt the weight and relentless responsibilities of the past few years, constantly reacting to the pandemic or the other challenges that have presented themselves. A strategic planning process offers the chance to refocus and renew. We are excited to cast our collective sights forward with energy, enthusiasm, and optimism. We hope you are, too.
