PSOM Statement on Supreme Court Decision

June 29, 2023

Dear Members of the Perelman School of Medicine Community,

I write to you as I reflect on today's Supreme Court decision in two related cases: Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard and Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina.

This ruling challenges longstanding admissions practices in academic medicine and higher education, including ours. At Penn Medicine, drawing talent from different backgrounds and experiences fuels creativity and is a source of our strength.

As President Magill and Provost Jackson shared in their message to the University community, this new ruling has implications for us, but it will not erode our dedication to a culture of inclusive excellence. We maintain our unwavering commitment to core values — while always operating firmly within the bounds of the law.

The Perelman School of Medicine has cultivated a vibrant environment that is reflected daily in the work of our students, faculty, and staff. Inclusive excellence elevates us all. It promotes compassion and trust, enhancing our missions in education, research, clinical care and community support. Embracing diversity in all its forms shapes a more inclusive and equitable future for health care and enriches our scientific discovery.

While the Supreme Court's decision presents new requirements, our organization has for centuries excelled at adapting to a changing world. United by our shared principles, we will continue to collaborate with other institutions, stakeholders and communities to advocate for policies that promote excellence, equity and opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to contribute to science and health care.

These are bedrock values. Our work to realize a healthy, just and equitable world continues.

Sincerely,
