Thank You for Your Contributions: A Portrait of Progress

July 5, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

In pointillism, a method of painting, an artist applies small dots and dabs of color to produce an image that visually blends from afar. In this style, each point is essential and helps form an overall cohesive image.

Each day at Penn Medicine, the individual efforts of more than 49,000 employees across the Perelman School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania Health System working in laboratories, clinic rooms, offices, facilities and communities combine to create a picture of health and a landscape of promise.

As we embark on a new fiscal year, we take stock of the strokes, big and small, all of which are vital in advancing excellence in research, clinical care, and education. During the past 12 months, together, we've accelerated progress at the bench, bedside and in neighborhoods near and far.

Lead with Humanity in Everything We Do

As part of our drive for inclusive excellence and continued focus on the Action for Cultural Transformation Strategic Plan, we have met over 85% of the “Just Do It” organizational goals to enhance institutional culture and increase equity. Continued focus on these strategies will help make Penn Medicine a place people want to work and where everyone can make the most of their careers.

Make Breathtaking Discoveries and Put Them to Work

Our research enterprise is growing and thriving. With 3,519 clinical research studies and more than $1 billion in sponsored research, we’re fueling scientific advances that have the power to transform lives.

Simplify Care and Place It within Reach

We provided exceptional care to our patients, anytime and anywhere, by conducting 718,542 home visits and through the dedicated efforts of our community health workers, effectively reducing ER visits and readmissions. A newly launched initiative allows patients the convenience of checking in via mobile device at outpatient facilities, further streamlining processes and optimizing experience.

Develop People for Great Accomplishment

Through educational and professional development experiences such as the Alliance to Increase Diversity in Genetic Counseling and the American College of Healthcare Executives Leadership Program, we are continually innovating learning opportunities that nurture and shape the future leaders of science and health care.

Uplift Our Community, Our Environment and Ourselves

Giving back to our neighbors and the world is core to our mission. This year, we provided 486 free mammograms at community health events, remediated lead health hazards from 207 homes in Lancaster County and raised over $300,000 to aid the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. These are just a few examples of the ways we support health and well-being where it’s needed most.

With these successes as a foundation, we move forward stronger and better poised to develop the innovations and treatments of tomorrow. Looking to the year ahead, we see a horizon of potential across scientific, clinical and administrative operations.

Thank you for your dedication, passion and other invaluable contributions to Penn Medicine. Together, we are serving a rapidly changing world to make a difference for patients now and in the future.

Wishing you a rewarding and fulfilling year ahead.
