Serving a Changing World

September 13, 2023

To our faculty, staff, students, and community:

We are pleased to share with you the Penn Medicine Strategic Plan 2023–2028: Serving a Changing World. Its bold vision reflects our core values, the promise of medicine, and our confidence that we will lead the world toward the goal of better health for all.

We invite you to read the plan and watch the video that accompanies it.

This strategic planning process began at a time of unimaginable change – marked by a devastating pandemic and social upheaval, by transformative biomedical discoveries that prevent and cure disease, and by the enduring spirit of health care workers everywhere. It also began at a time of new university leadership, and a university strategic visioning process built around the ideal that the University of Pennsylvania is a leader in service to the world.

Here at Penn Medicine, we asked, “How can we serve this rapidly changing world?” The resulting plan represents a year of engagement and introspection. So many of you contributed your thoughts, expertise, and time.

Our answers came in five parts, reflecting both a broad, integrated mission and a commitment to elevating the field:

  • Lead with humanity in everything we do.

  • Make breathtaking discoveries and put them to work.

  • Simplify care delivery and place it within reach.

  • Develop people for great accomplishment.

  • Uplift our community, our environment, and ourselves.

As you read the plan, we hope you will see courage and optimism. While the plan sets forth a pathway grounded in science, education, and health care, we hope you will also see that its essential purpose is to improve the lives of people and advance their well-being.

Over the next five years, we will measure our successes, embrace new opportunities, navigate challenges, and share our progress. We will also continue to align our efforts toward the goals of the university’s strategic framework, which will soon be announced. And we will continue to rely on your insights along the way.

Perhaps our greatest hope in sharing this plan is that members of our community see their ideals, their opportunities, and their value reflected here. This is our collective plan, and we are excited to embark on this journey with you.

Sincerely,
