Announcing the appointment of Roy Hamilton, MD, MS, FANA, FAAN, as the Vice Dean for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity at Penn Medicine

March 4, 2024

Roy Hamilton, MD, MS, FANA, FAAN  It is our great pleasure to announce that Roy Hamilton, MD, MS, FANA, FAAN, has been appointed Vice Dean for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (IDE) at Penn Medicine, effective April 1. After a nationwide search, we are delighted that Dr. Hamilton will lead our Office of IDE to advance, foster, and support an environment grounded in diversity, respect, and tolerance for individuals of all backgrounds.

Dr. Hamilton is a Professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM), with secondary appointments in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Psychiatry. He obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard University and a master’s degree in Health Sciences Technology from MIT. He completed residency training in Neurology and a fellowship in Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology at Penn before joining the faculty in 2009. Dr. Hamilton’s laboratory research employs noninvasive neuromodulation to characterize and remediate human cognition in neurological disorders. He directs the Laboratory for Cognition and Neural Stimulation (LCNS) and the Penn Brain Science, Translation, Innovation and Modulation Center (brainSTIM).

Nationally recognized for his work in diversity, inclusion, and equity in Neurology and academic medicine, Dr. Hamilton served as Assistant Dean for Cultural Affairs and Diversity at PSOM from 2013-2022 and was the inaugural Associate Editor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for the journal Neurology and four other academic journals published by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) between 2019-2023. He currently serves as the Vice Chair for Diversity and Inclusion for Penn Neurology and is the recipient of both the AAN’s inaugural Changemaker Award and the American Neurological Association’s Audrey S. Penn Lecture award for his work in diversity, equity, and inclusion, both in Penn Neurology and in the field more broadly.

With this announcement, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Eve Higginbotham, SM, MD, ML, the inaugural Vice Dean of IDE, who admirably led Penn Medicine in this role for over a decade. Dr. Higginbotham’s leadership was transformative, enhancing inclusion, diversity, and equity within the academic, educational, and clinical missions of the medical school. Under her stewardship, the launch of the Office of IDE in 2013 provided an impetus for a greater institutional focus on inclusive excellence, including the creation of the cross-institutional initiative, the Action for Cultural Transformation (ACT), which strives to eliminate structural injustice across Penn Medicine and the communities we serve and continue to progress to a more inclusive culture. Details for celebrating Dr. Higginbotham will be forthcoming.

Lastly, our thanks to Liz Howell, MD, and the committee members who oversaw the search process and our selection of Dr. Hamilton. Please join us in congratulating him on this new role.
