Dear Colleagues,

For close to a year now, I have valued the thoughtful and sound counsel and contributions of E. Michael Ostap, PhD, an integral member of the Dean’s leadership team. I am pleased to announce his appointment as Senior Vice Dean and Chief Scientific Officer for the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) at the University of Pennsylvania, effective immediately. Having served in this role as interim since April 2024, Dr. Ostap will continue to oversee all aspects of research and research training, including our nationally recognized Biomedical Graduate Studies, Medical Scientist Training Program, and Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs.

During this past year and in particular over the last several months amidst an evolving research landscape, Dr. Ostap has worked to comprehensively understand the uniqueness and complexities of and facing PSOM. In a relatively short time, he has made significant advancements to our research and education missions, which includes meeting with members of our community across all domains to provide support and listen to concerns; poring over publications and attending symposia and seminars to learn about the depth and breadth of our research; considering new processes and structures to review and evaluate efficiencies; and leading initiatives to continue to enhance our collaborative community.

Having contributed to Penn for nearly three decades as an accomplished scientist, dedicated mentor and educator, and quintessential institutional leader, Dr. Ostap is a trusted and respected colleague. You can learn more about his work and accomplishments here.

I am delighted that Dr. Ostap is serving in this integral role, and I look forward to his far-reaching impact on our PSOM community.

Best regards,

Jon
