In a recent paper from the Stanger Lab published in the journal Nature Communications, Aiello et al. used lineage tracing to define the natural history of metastasis in pancreatic cancer and assess the effects of chemotherapy on secondary tumors. The authors found that the metastatic microenvironment gradually accumulates with growth until it closely resembles that of the primary tumor. In contrast to the primary tumor microenvironment however, the metastatic stroma does not protect lesions from the effects of chemotherapy. Only single disseminated cells are able to resist treatment, and in so doing they acquire epithelial features.

Dr. Mark O'Hara participates with the medal-winning Love For Life dragon boat crew (photo right). A Love For Life is dedicated to raising funds for pancreatic cancer research. It is raced in celebration of Kevin Edmonds, who passed away from pancreatic cancer. He was only 51 years old. One hundred percent of the money raised goes to Penn Medicine to help find a cure.
