MindCORE Seminar: Taraz Lee

Date: December 1, 2023

Speaker: Taraz Lee, Department of Psychology, University of Michigan

Description: Cognition, Control, and Action: the multifaceted interplay between cognitive and motor systems

Cognitive Control is a term used to describe the ability to flexibly adapt information processing and behavior in the service of our goals by exerting cognitive effort to overcome our habits and automatic thoughts/actions. We are fundamentally interested in the neural mechanisms that support these top-down processes and how they interact with motivation, learning, memory, and skilled action. In our investigations we use a multifaceted approach combining carefully designed behavioral experiments, computational modeling, functional magnetic resonance imagining (fMRI), and non-invasive brain stimulation via transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

Dr. Casey Halpern's News Release

Wednesday, August 30, 2023

In this release, Penn Medicine researchers identify the link between memory and appetite in the human brain to explain obesity. Dr. Halpern speaks about the complexity of disordered eating in conditions such as binge eating disorder (BED) and the role of impaired connections between the dorsolateral hippocampus (dIHPC) and the lateral hypothalamus (LH), which may impact affected individuals' ability to control or regulate emotional responses when anticipating rewarding meals or treats.

Dr. Desmond Oathes' new Center for Brain Imaging and Stimulation (CBIS)

The brainSTIM Center would like to congratulate Desmond Oathes, PhD, in the creation of his new center, Center for Brain Imaging and Stimulation (CBIS). The goal of the center is to leverage cutting edge neuroimaging to guide brain stimulation tools that interrogate and manipulate brain networks involved in neuropsychiatric conditions. They also pursue TMS/fMRI methods development research with broad applications to cognitive and affective systems. The brainSTIM Center looks forward to collaborating with CBIS.
