About the Implementation Science Institute
Implementation science has emerged as a discipline to bridge the research-to-practice gap. Implementation research is the scientific study of methods to improve the adoption, implementation, and sustainment of evidence-based practices in health services settings.
The Implementation Science Institute (ISI) aims to provide participants with the tools to design and execute rigorous implementation science research. The Institute will give an introduction to the foundations of implementation science (i.e., terminology, conceptual models and frameworks, study design). Participants will also receive an overview of advanced topics including implementation strategies and sustainability and a reading list of seminal papers in implementation science. The course directors will cover tips for grant writing, skill development and time will be spent writing specific aims for Implementation Science grants. We will also explicitly describe how principles of implementation science can be applied to practical implementation efforts.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Implementation Science Institute (ISI) is designed to be a short, introductory course that covers a wide range of implementation science topics. This course is perfect for those new to the field of implementation science who want to learn the fundamentals in preparation for more advanced implementation science education or designing and executing their own implementation science research projects.
The ISI allows beginners to be exposed to a wide range of implementation science concepts in a 4-day time period. Each of our sessions is led by world-class faculty in the field of implementation science and its related topics. Attendees have the opportunity to learn from these speakers through their individual presentations, small group activities, and one-on-one office hours held during the ISI. The course is also fully virtual, allowing participants from across the globe to join and connect with a wide range of individuals from similar or different fields. 2026 will be our 10th year hosting this course, making us one of the oldest implementation science workshops in the country.
While you’re welcome to take the Implementation Science Institute again, the content stays consistent across Institutes, and you will likely cover the same information as in the previous one. If you are interested in further implementation science learning, we recommend pursuing more advanced or topic-specific implementation science courses.
The ISI does not have any required work before or during the course. The ISI team, however, will provide attendees with an optional reading list and resources ahead of the event. These resources can provide useful background information on topics that will be discussed during the ISI.
If you’re a beginner to implementation science, the ISI is a great opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of implementation science concepts and resources. This can provide you with a solid foundation for implementation projects and future learning. However, if you’re specifically looking for dedicated support on a particular project or field of study, we’d recommend using our consultation form instead. We also offer small group activities and office hours as opportunities for more intimate discussions during the ISI.
Each year, a handful of centers and departments within the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia provide scholarships for attendees who meet their specified scholarship criteria. PISCE also offers scholarships to attendees coming from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). You can reach out to ISInstitute@pennmedicine.upenn.edu for more information.
