What is Implementation Science?

Implementation research is the "scientific study of methods to promote the systematic uptake of research findings and other evidence-based practices into routine practice" (Eccles & Mitman, 2006).  An alternative definition is that implementation science is the science of planned human behavior change under organizational constraints (Anne Sales).  Many people wonder whether their topic area of interest "counts" as implementation science.  To help answer that question, we created the "implementation science subway map" below to guide newcomers to IS through the process of figuring out whether their area of interest is ready for an implementation science-informed approach.
