Bridging the Gap from Bench to Bedside

LBI is part of a vital strategy to invest in cross-disciplinary research programs. Tomorrow’s challenges demand innovation and unconventional approaches that are often outside of traditional research programs that are usually defined by singular disciplines. LBI is notable for its inclusion of both basic science and clinical research initiatives to foster the sharing of data, expertise, and innovation that will ultimately propel our faculty to generate unparalleled patient care advancements.

Research areas of particular focus in the LBI include:

The lung is one of few organs tasked with managing daily environmental insults from dust, allergens, air pollution, and pathogens. How the lung prevents, combats and repairs itself from these insults, and how the regenerative process can go awry in lung diseases like cancer or COPD, are topics of critical ongoing research. Understanding the molecular and cellular events governing normal lung biology will help instruct the development of novel therapies for lung diseases.

In order to develop and adequately test novel lung therapies, there is a critical need for reproducible and physiologically relevant animal and human model systems to replicate the molecular hallmarks of human respiratory diseases. Researchers in the LBI are developing such models by employing state of the art genomics, proteomics, real-time imaging, novel stem cell approaches, 3D tissue organ culturing systems, and CRISPR mediated genomic editing technologies.

To advance translational research, access to human lung patient sample is needed through well organized biobanking initiatives. Both HUP and CHOP are among the top lung transplant centers in the country and the Center for Applied Genomics at CHOP is one of the largest genetics research programs in the world. Research collaborations between basic scientists and transplant surgeons at HUP and CHOP uniquely position the LBI to access both adult and pediatric normal donor and diseased lung tissue for research. By bringing together outstanding world-renowned leaders in the fields of surgery, genomics, and lung cell biology, the LBI is uniquely positioned to build a unique repository of human lung tissue samples to current and future research in respiratory diseases.
