Dr. Kohanski has been on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania since 2018 following completion of his rhinology and skull base surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He is in the division of Rhinology and Skull Base surgery and is a member of the Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD) Center. Dr. Kohanski focuses on the treatment of recalcitrant sinus infections, revision sinus surgery, sinus tumors and endoscopic cerebrospinal fluid leak repairs. Dr. Kohanski also collaborates closely with the Neurosurgery Department on endoscopic approaches to resect tumors of the anterior skull base. Dr. Kohanski has a special interest in translating new advances in our understanding of chronic rhinosinusitis from the bench to the bedside to improve the lives of those suffering from chronic rhinosinusitis. Dr. Kohanski brings a comprehensive clinical approach incorporating the latest clinical advances in rhinology while also tailoring care to the individual’s goals and needs to help those afflicted with disorders of the paranasal sinuses.

Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Kohanski’s research focuses include understanding the role of inflammatory signals in the development of sinus polyps, with a focus on rare upper respiratory epithelial cells, solitary chemosensory cells, as a source of inflammation. From his Ph.D. work on antibiotic mechanisms of action and the development of antibiotic resistance, Dr. Kohanski also has an interest in understanding the evolution of antibiotic resistance as it pertains to the use of antibiotics in the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis. Dr. Kohanski is an author/co-author on over 50 peer reviewed scientific articles.
